For most of us, the realisation of just how important our boiler is does not occur until it breaks down. When we are left with no heating or hot water, and the prospect of an expensive repair bill, it could be time to think about investing in a new one. It is recommended that if your boiler is over 10 years old, then a replacement should be sought. Although this may seem expensive, investing in a new energy efficient boiler could save you up to 40%* a year on your energy bill, whilst helping you reduce your carbon footprint with lower CO2 emissions.
Boiler Types
It is a legal requirement that all new boilers installed must be energy efficient condensing types. They have low CO2 emissions, making them kinder to the planet, and are also economical to run, which means they save you money on energy bills - up to £200* a year.
When choosing a new boiler, it is vital to consider the type of fuel you use i.e. gas or oil, the level of heating output required, and also the size of your home.
Combination Boilers - Combination or Combi Boilers are highly energy efficient, providing instant heating and hot water. They require less space as no hot water storage tank is required, making them perfect for smaller homes. However given their compact size, their hot water flow rate is lower than other boilers.
Conventional Boilers - Also known as Heat Only or Open Vent Boilers, will provide heating, and hot water, but require a separate hot water storage tank. They have high water flow rates and can provide hot water to two baths at once, however a separate hot water tank will require more space (usually loft), therefore they are suited to larger homes.
System Boilers - These are also known as Sealed System Boilers, and require a hot water cylinder, which is usually stored in an airing cupboard. Best suited for larger homes, with two or more bathrooms, they are economical to run. They do not provide instant hot water, so will require you to wait for water to be reheated.
Where To Look For The Best Boiler Deals?
Although there are numerous independent new boiler installers available, it's often cheaper to go through your energy provider. British Gas is the UK's largest and most trusted installer of new boilers, repair and maintenance provider. Others such as EON and Southern Electric also offer boiler installation services. Such places only use CORGI approved engineers, so you can be sure of a safe, and quality service.
