Can You Be a More Environmentally Friendly Parent?

Saving the environment for our future generations

What better place to start being environmentally-friendly than with your own new-born baby! After all, that's what environmental conservation and protection is all about- saving the environment and all its natural resources for our future generations to inherit and enjoy. Your baby is the beginning of that future generation so set a fine example by consuming only environmentally friendly products for your baby. Resist the urge to buy baby products that may be cheaper or more convenient but are detrimental to your baby's very inheritance.

Wondering where to start?

Deluged by advertisements promoting all those cute products that every parent feels they must buy for their new born baby? New parents are easy targets and advertisers take full advantage of it; the list of things touted as absolutely necessary for a baby is never-ending. There are strollers; high chairs; prams; beds; nursery furniture; baby clothing and accessories; baby toiletries; feeding bottles. Nothing wrong with buying all that, after all, every parent wants only the best for their little ones. However the thought of landfills that are clogged with disposable diapers and other disposable baby goods should be enough to stop you in your tracks.

Your baby is too small to know whether the clothes, bed and other accessories are new or second-hand. Designer labels are not in the least bit interesting to a newborn who would happily burp on any outfit with the same gleeful disdain. What's more, in the first few months your baby is going to outgrow everything you've bought in a matter of days, if not weeks. If you look around there are plenty of stores selling baby items including cradles, strollers and high chairs. You'll find they are in pretty good shape too, after all little babies are highly unlikely to inflict serious damage to any of their furniture.

Most parents consider pampers as the single most convenient baby product available. Consider this- it takes two trees to provide sufficient pulp for each baby's pamper requirements for a year. Worse still- it takes a few hundred years for these pampers to break down. Is it really worth it? Reusable nappies are now available that are much more efficient than ever before. If every new parent did just this one thing and switched over to reusable nappies, we'd save a lot of trees and prevent landfills from getting clogged.
